EXPLORING FINNISH ROOTS TROUGH TALES AND SONGS

While exploring Finnish roots, one question was spinning in my mind. How can i squeeze Finland into half an hour? I offer two different services. Let’s focus now on my half-hour narrative presentation, Reflections of Finland. It promises a deep dive into the roots of Finnishness through songs and stories, as well as a glimpse of Finnish culture through folklore.

But can we really obtain the essence of Finnish identity in such a short time?

The truth is, it’s impossible to capture all of Finnishness in half an hour. For every person who identifies as Finnish, there is a unique definition of what Finnishness means. It’s a combination of what’s passed down through generations and the life circles that surround us as we grow.

Let’s dive deeper into this.

The Connection Between Past and Present

Finland is a small country, young in written history. However, when we think about history, it’s important to consider whose stories have been recorded and whose remain untold. First of all, who are the storytellers? And secondly, who are they telling the stories to, and why?

As I say at the beginning of my performance, I want to offer a small piece of Finland. My goal is not to overwhelm with facts (no fear of a PowerPoint presentation) but especially to create unforgettable experiences. My focus is on creating a connection—between myself and the audience, and between past and present.

The line between the present and past helps us understand both ourselves and others. By understanding culture and identity, we can better understand each other. I’ve always felt that there are always connections we can find. Through my storytelling, I aim to guide the audience on a journey. My voice will lead you through stories and songs, connecting the past and the present.

The Magic of Stories and Songs – Discovering the essence of Finnish

Ever since i was a child, I’ve been captivated by mythology and the past. I remember my first family trip to Lapland with my cousin and her family. We found an animal skull near our cabin, and in our imagination, we created rituals and songs, calling the area sacred. Humans have a fundamental need to connect and understand the world around them. When we don’t have clear answers, our imagination fills the gaps with supernatural meanings.

Stories have been essential to human survival. Learning from them and passing on oral wisdom helped our ancestors stay alive. Even today, humans long for a sense of belonging, and in our modern world, storytelling remains vital. Oral traditions connect us to the past and help us understand our roots.

The Heartbeat of Finland in My Finnish Veins

This is my Finland. In my veins flows the stories of my ancestors—stories I’ve listened to since I was young. I’ve walked through fragrant swamps, tasted the sourness of lingonberries, and listened to the crow’s call. I’ve dipped cold toes into warm water after a skiing trip. All these moments create a unique map, one that is deeply connected to my Finnish identity. Finnishness beats and flows within me.

For my half-hour narrative presentation, I first spent countless hours reading, exploring Finnish roots, collecting stories, myths, and legends. Then I arranged them side by side, like socks in pairs. Eventually, a red thread began to form.

But as we say, “kill your darlings”—half an hour is surprisingly short, so many treasures had to be left out. Each story is a gift, a treasure to share with the listener.

Ultimately, I have woven everything in my presentation together with love and curiosity. The thought of “I really want to share this” has driven me forward. These stories have sparked my imagination, and I hope they will bring enchantment, joy, curiosity, and maybe even goosebumps and tears of emotion to the listener.

Reflections of Finland: A Personal Lens

So, what do I share in these 30 minutes? I want to tell you about the birth of the bear, Finland’s national animal, about forest creatures and their power. Then, I will tell you about the Northern Lights and take you with me into the forest. We’ll explore the power of words and the surprising power of women that Finns believed in. Through these stories, I aim to connect the audience to the heart of Finland, inviting them to feel and understand the rich tapestry of our culture.

To summarize, Reflections of Finland is a collection of stories viewed through my personal lens—the only one I can truly claim. Of course, I hope my ancestors aren’t turning in their graves while. My parents’ parents—Toivo and Kerttu, Veikko, and Maire—are watching from the stars, amused by my efforts while exploring Finnish roots . From their peaceful vantage point, they now watch me toil with love and encouragement.

“Go ahead, girl. Sing your heart out—make us proud.”
